As someone in the health care field I have huge objections to what is being called Obamacare. But as conservatives we are to eager to dismiss the profound need for health care reform in America. The current system is killing Americans. In American today health care is something you can either afford or you cannot. The death panels have been in place for quite some time. Americans are losing everything they own simply because they get sick. This is America...we are better than that! It is not enough to say Romney and Obama got it wrong, at least they have offered something. It's time we on the right offer something more than "not that." There are real things that we can do but it will require more than a left vs. right mentality. It begins with asking the right questions and having the right motivations.
I find that folks with adequate health care have a very different view than those who don't! We are quick on the right to dismiss any government involvement as socialism. It's the trigger word we use to dismiss anything we don't want to deal with. But I don't hear anyone calling medicare or prescription drug benefits socialism. Why is that? Because we either receive those benefits or expect to one day. We don't refer to the great Americans serving in our military as socialists because they receive government funded health care. It would be stupid to do so.
This idea that anything government does is to be avoided is not logical. How should we pay for law enforcement? Can education truly be offered to all American children without any taxpayer support? How do the roads get paved and the bridges built? Were Clinton and Bush right about less oversight and accountability on Wall Street? Would we have more or fewer civil rights in this country if government had not gotten involved? Would women or African-Americans be able to vote? Democracy should mean free Americans working together not just survival of the fittest.
